Finding a therapist
The best way to find a CBT therapist is to contact the CBT accrediting body in your country. They will have a list of suitably qualified therapists.
In the United States contact the American Psychological Association or the Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Therapies
In the United Kingdom contact the British Psychological Society or the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies
In Canada contact the Canadian Association of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies
In Australia contact the Australian Association for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
Issues to consider when choosing a therapist
Are they a clinical or counselling psychologist, a CBT therapist, or some other form of therapist?
What areas of therapy do they have expertise in? Some therapists work predominantly with adults, others with children. Does your therapist have expertise in treating the condition you are looking for help with?
Model of therapy
Irrespective of qualifications, what form of therapy do they practice? Possibilities include: CBT, systemic, psychodynamic, cognitive analytic, solution-focused. They might integrate ideas from more than one model of therapy.
Do you think you could form a good working relationship with this person? Could you trust them to work with you sensitively? This has been shown to have a powerful impact on the effectiveness of therapy.
