Judith Beck Style Formulation
The Judith Beck Style Formulation is a cognitive behavioral case formulation diagram adapted from Judith Beck's approach. It combines a longitudinal and cross-sectional approach. Information about events in childhood (typically adverse events) is used to inform core beliefs (schemas). Conditional assumptions and coping behaviors are also collected. This longitudinal information is used to inform the client's reactions in here-and-now situations.
This is a case formulation (case conceptualization) diagram. Put simply, case formulation is one method of a client and therapist coming to shared understanding of a difficulty. The formulation contextualizes the difficulty, making its origin and maintenance understandable. Case formulations are best completed collaboratively, with clients positioned as the 'experts in themselves'.
